The North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) focuses on community stewardship and collaborative habitat restoration along the Olympic Peninsula. Environmental protection for the benefit of wild salmon is the central intention for the work done by NOSC. Education plays a major role in the restoration projects, whether it be tree planting or invasive weed-pulls. It is vital that future generations attain the knowledge regarding renewable practices, preservation, and conservation of natural resources, necessary for combating climate change. NOSC is providing this through projects such as a native plant restoration project with Blue Heron Middle School students at Snow Creek, surrounding Discovery Bay.

Book Recommendation:

Under the Sea-Wind by Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson, a marine biologist, writer and environmentalist, wrote Under the Sea-Wind in 1941. Carson illustrates the harmonious behaviors of the natural world and depicts the relationships between organisms and their environment. The book follows the adventures of sea birds and other marine life. Carson’s literary works provoke a sense of urgency for environmental protection in a vivid and gentle manner. Her descriptive and realistic magnified look into ecosystems while evoking the five senses, is peaceful, yet has a tinge of melancholy, as the audience likely knows that the modern world is at risk due to climate change and pollution. Under the Sea-Wind creates a beautiful window into a world that humans must admire and observe, while not destructively encroaching on.
